The project’s theme evolves from personal experiences, selecting a broad concept of belonging and familiarity as its research focus. The investigation is carried out based on London’s Chinatown. During the exploration of this area, I discovered that the cultural elements in this region have become iconic representations. This led me to explore the cultural familiarity these elements, imbued with cultural significance, bring to individuals with a Chinese cultural background. I aim to visually perceive the abstract phrase and form it takes. I chose the lantern, a symbol of familiarity with Chinese culture, and through decontextualization, I aim to revive the cultural meanings behind these elements. By resetting the context, these meanings are presented in new ways within our present daily lives. Audiences can engage in assembling lanterns on-site, fostering diverse visual interpretations of cultural familiarity.
