The title of my project is The Lives of Hermits. Often people assume that hermits are a thing of the past, reserved for bible passages or medieval tales, but the tradition of hermitage has continued to this day. I aimed to produce a body of work that explores the lives of hermits: how they survive, their everyday lives, and what we have to learn from them.
I made an animation communicating the message that being alone doesn’t equate loneliness. People often think that spending time alone is a negative thing, and pity or look down on people living in voluntary isolation, but I wanted to push against this idea with my animation. My piece is about embracing solitude as a concept and highlights the idea that socialising with people isn’t necessarily superior or better than being alone.
