Hi there! I’m Raph(aela), a Graphic Designer and maker with a curious, light-hearted approach to design, problem-solving, interrogation and making which manifests in design steeped in play and observation. My work is characterised by attentiveness to the micro and macro aspects and issues that permeate our world; using graphic design as a tool to investigate, celebrate and critique the everyday.
Morphology: Function Follows Form — uses the transformation of letterforms from the typeface ‘Heal The Web B’ into 3D objects to encourage critical reflection on the relationship between form and function in design. The project has a multifaceted outcome, including a publication that showcases one of the letterform-turned-objects and documents the project’s process. The publication has three sections reflecting the three-part-phrase “function follows form” and explores the diverse range of possibilities in subverted typography through objects built based on imagined functions. The publication is complemented by several 3D objects which were crafted in the shapes of various letterforms; including capital ‘T’ shaped candle stick holders, ‘z’ shaped s-hooks and a lowercase ‘t’ stool/ side table. These objects showcase the potential of subverted typography and bring into question the relationship between form and function in design through their unique designs; inspiring new avenues for exploration and innovation.
