Travel Memories in the Making is an initiative consisting of a series of workshops for travellers, promoting the activation of unvisited parts of cities while supporting artists and makers. During the workshops, participants select city memories to incorporate into handmade pieces with the assistance of local makers. The creations are transformed into postcards that integrate a big map of memories of the city. This initiative stands in contrast to the unsustainable consumerism of mass-produced souvenirs, encouraging genuine community engagement and cultural exchange.
Over the last decades, tourism has experienced substantial growth, contributing 7.6% to the global GDP in 2022, and standing as a significant source of employment. However, as the tourism industry expands, there is a growing concern regarding its environmental, economic, cultural and social consequences.
Given that travel is part of our lives and is projected to continue growing in the coming years, it is vital that we develop better ways of travelling, aligned with the planet’s well-being and contributing to the thriving of communities.
How can collaborative experiences with local makers and artists enhance the travel journey, promote sustainability, and foster meaningful connections between travellers and the local creative community?
