What makes Rail Transport so incredible?! One of the questions I explored and experimented with throughout my project. I found it’s not just the useful places they go, or the view from the window, but the experience as a whole that makes the railway just so fascinating! Many commute a lot, leading to a loss of love for the railway; I aimed to recapture this joy and exciting experience.
I interviewed a selection of people to find out what they loved about the railways. I found that most people who commuted did not enjoy their journeys; some had previously enjoyed rail transport, but lost this when they began to use it on a daily basis. When I was interviewing my Grandad I found that when he commuted into Waterloo for years, almost 40 years ago, he too hated his journey at this time, even though he loved the railways, having spent much time when he was train spotting, and now spends much time travelling on the railways for fun, holidays and daytrips. I found this fascinating, deciding to use his experience as a way to communicate this loss of love and how it can be reclaimed!
Unique, incredible, joyful! Rail Transport is an amazing thing, with many important parts and components which make it fascinating! It isn’t just the views you can see whilst travelling that make the Rails great, but the experience as a whole!
