My project explored the history and nature of chess as both a physical and psychological entity. The project took me on a journey of discovery from the preconceived ideas I had about chess, having played it competitively since when I was young, to a much deeper and more complex place where I explored not only what makes chess chess, but also what does it mean to me. Eventually through research and testing I formed the opinion that chess is not about the moves. I believe it is about the people and the psychology more than what moves infant of them; t is a mental game interweaved with humanity for centuries. Focusing on the psychology, looking back when I used to play and how that affected me, as well as through interviews, I could see chess forces you to think in a certain ways. I wanted to display these ways of thinking in a final piece and therefore I made an animation where I used metaphorical imagery to communicate this to those who may not have been forced to think like this before.
Chess is not about the moves. Chess is about the humanity, psychology and mental struggle. Through my work I discovered it is a way of thinking, and this is what I ended up exploring in my outcome.
