Coined by Riz Ahmed, the title “Sepia Sapna” translates to the brown and white dream and refers to the misunderstood identity of a South Asian immigrant stuck in a cultural grey area; belonging to everywhere and nowhere. This film explores the correlation between Ajamu’s “Self-portrait in Wedding Dress 1”, footage from my mother’s wedding and the context of my upbringing by means of visual parallels in split-screen.
This film is the outcome of a brief to make an experimental 3-minute documentary in response to an artwork in the “Sixty Years: The Unfinished Conversation” display at Tate Britain.
Directed, Filmed and Edited by Nikhil Mirpuri.
With help from Alice Torres, Paul Burt and Susan Doyon.
Inspired by Ajamu’s “Self-portrait in a Wedding Dress 1”.
Music: Sheila Chandra’s “Speaking in Tongues II”.
