Inspired by the Adhocism Movement, this project is a critical questioning of the way materials are used in the traditional design process of a product.
The conventional product design process involves stages such as: ideation, development, and physical construction – during which material choices evolve to fit the projects’ function and aesthetic. In contrast, this project takes an opposite approach by utilizing discarded, pre-made materials as the starting point for ideation. The starting point of my 10 pieces hinge around these found items, therefore my designs develop from the materials chosen rather than the material developing from the designs.
I wanted to explore the potential of the completely discarded. This is why the source of my materials is primarily from local skips, an ever-changing network of treasure troves.
Although this avant-garde approach to design has come with its own set of limitations, it has led to outcomes that traditional design processes would not have helped me to achieve.
