My FMP explored what it means to be placeless. I started out by looking at how it manifests. The main factor being the failure to provide us with the opportunity for random encounters and therefore holds little significance in our memory. Our experience is highly manufactured. I looked at ‘non places’- a term coined by anthropologist Marc Auge where humans remain anonymous, such as shopping centres, airports and hotels. It ties in with another similar term ‘junkspace’ which are spaces devoid of a true purpose. One example is corridors which I explored in further detail. They are liminal as we pass through them to get from A to B. This prompted research on the online urban legend ‘The Backrooms’ and horror films such as The Shining which inspired my final piece. I wanted the audience to feel unsettled as they spend more time in the location than normal. Viewing the piece is a more permanent experience in somewhere so ephemeral.
I started my research and testing by looking at the similarities in architecture found in non places which can be seen in my layered images. The bed sculpture is the result of my findings on the psychological impacts. I then focused on corridors and their importance in the horror genre.
