Luca walks between the boundaries of race and gender, using illustration to confront the dysmorphia between ascribed labels of “black” and “male”.
His practice is very much concerned with identity, and how it’s expressed and reclaimed beyond normative expectations of race and gender through the tactility of collage.
At the core of Luca’s practice is a defiant exploration of eroticism within his body. He aims to reclaim his gender identity beyond the rigid assertions of “black masculinity”; to imbue his presence with a bold eccentricity more comfortably exhibited and exaggerated within an illustrative medium.
He combines the mediums of self-portraiture and fashion illustration to synergise interests in queer clothing and make-up. Through vibrant mixed-media compositions, he boldly transgresses the norms of gender identity, in the process exploring his truth.
Beyond self-portraiture, Luca is interested in capturing and amplifying the beauty of others discursively, then reinterpreting this information visually through new designs and compositions inspired by their likenesses.
