Throughout my FMP I have examined the relationship between craft and place. I looked at how crafted objects play a valuable role in storytelling and recounting the heritage of a place. My outcome responds to this research by focussing on a specific place and craft- East London and silk weaving. The tapestry is an example of what could have been made in an imaginary community weaving workshop. In the workshop a group of people would learn to weave in Weavers’ Fields, East London to celebrate the weaving heritage of the area and the communities that live there. It is made from hand dyed Tencel yarn for its silk like appearance, referencing East London’s history of silk weaving. The design was prompted by the large Bangladeshi population that live in the area and their rich textile heritage. It takes motifs from traditional hand-loomed jamdani, a fine cotton muslin originating from Bengal.
Weaving the stories of a place together.
