My graduate fashion collection is a visual exploration of my identity as an identical twin, drawing inspiration from the Rorschach test. Just as the Rorschach test presents ambiguous inkblots that provoke varied interpretations, my collection symbolises my identity as a twin, demonstrated through the use of contrasting textures, layered garments, experimentation with symmetrical and asymmetrical silhouettes, and my Rorschach test prints.
The Rorschach test, often associated with psychological analysis, is a metaphorical framework for my collection. My collection includes my hand painted and bleached print designs of the Rorschach test, as well as digitally rendered and printed artwork that I created. Just as the inkblots reveal hidden meanings based on individual perception, my designs reflect the unique perspectives and experiences that come with being an identical twin. Through the interplay of symmetry and asymmetry, my garments demonstrate the duality that represents the the twin bond.
‘Nature vs nurture’ was another concept that inspired my collection- identical twins share genetic makeup, which provides an opportunity to explore how individual traits and behaviours are influenced by both innate factors and external influences. This concept inspired my fabric choices, such as cotton oilskin, a fabric that builds texture and print the more it is manipulated. This also inspired my decision to paint some of my prints directly onto the garments.
In conclusion, my graduate fashion collection is an artistic exploration of my identity as an identical twin- embracing the ambiguity and complexity inherent in both twinhood and the inkblots, my designs aim to capture the multiplicity of interpretations, perceptions, and connections that define my unique journey and identity as a twin.
My graduate collection encapsulates my identity as an identical twin, and the Rorschach test and identical twins both offer insights into the dynamic between perception and individuality. The inkblots represent how one image can invite diverse interpretations, similar to how twins with shared characteristics embody distinct identities.
