A site set in a grade one listed building the House Mill located in Bromley-By-Bow, my final major project aims to create a space that enhances the connection between people and nature. It aim to do this by unifying science with the arts. As a fast pace everchanging world where technology is so quickly distracting, it becomes a space of pause and reflection on the connection between ourselves and the beauty around us. It includes two main spaces, a theatre and a research centre, whilst also highlighting the planet’s natural phenomena through various cuts and skylights within the building; for example, the summer solstice. This space uses the awe of the natural phenomena as an educational experience in combination with informative performance and research, as a place where people can learn and see the wonder of the beauty of the planet they live on. Whilst it is a space that is welcome for the public, it presents an opportunity for two unlikely communities to come together- the scientific and the theatrical communities. The research centre becomes a space of innovation, thought and discovery, and the theatre a place of storytelling and education that captures the minds of others. Both these sectors entwine, through coming together in playwrighting, in the hope of shedding light on the environmental problems today, promoting awareness and, hopefully, action to better the planet. This collaboration of these two disciplines integrating their expertise and work strives to inspire other people to take action to impact the environment positively.
