The UK currently imports 86% of its flowers from overseas, mostly from The Netherlands and Kenya. These are transported via a cold chain, travelling from fields to store in as little to 3-5 days. However, when preserved in water the flowers will typically only last 7-12 days before being disposed of. This project aims to explore how we can display our flowers whilst drying them, in order to allow them a longer life.
Fiore is a hanging vase that enables the user to easily arrange, display and dry out fresh bouquets. The act of flower arranging increases our levels of serotonin, dopamine and oxytocin. Fiore allows the user to display fresh flowers – and observe their gradual transition throughout a 2-4 week drying period.
Once dried, flowers can be displayed for over a year, providing a longer lasting and sustainable option to store brought flowers.
