The title of my Final Major Project is ‘Habitual Beings’. This work thoroughly examines systems of power and influence, and considers how particular ‘habits’ are manipulated by overarching power structures. Focusing more specifically on the patriarchy, this work consistently criticises the manner in which this system (dis)advantages specific groups. I have drawn attention to women and their relationship with the private sphere, investigating how both the patriarchy and the capitalist system interact to exploit women in regard to unpaid domestic work, care and emotional labour. My final outcome, entitled ‘Cuddles, Warmth and Stroking My Hair’ seeks to emphasise the importance of care by inviting the audience to lie down on the structure and receive a ‘hug’ from its large extended arms. This work preaches that emotional comfort should not be neglected, rather celebrated.
