Ancestor follows Nia, the player, on her journey to become a protector over her family. In African cultures, such as the Fon, they don’t believe you end life with death, but evolve to become an ancestor that protects those in the living world. This is why I made it possible for Nia to be helped and protected by her ancestors in the game, however it is believed that the journey home will be difficult and complicated, hence the platformer elements. I enjoyed making a game that both celebrated different cultures’ view on the afterlife, in addition to growing my coding skills in Unity.
Ancestor is an exploration into some African cultures’ views on death. From my findings I created a 2D narrative platformer game using Unity, following Nia on her complicated journey to become an ancestor.
